What is Solution Focused Practice?

Solution Focused practice is:

  • A way of talking with people that helps them make changes in their lives
  • A way of listening to people, listening for strengths, skills, talents and abilities
  • A way of paying attention – watching out for what people are doing well
  • There are always ‘exceptions’ to a problem (de Shazer)
  • When does the problem not happen, happens less, happens with less intensity, or lasts not as long?
  • Helping the person to do more of ‘what already works’
  • Focuses on progress and the person’s strengths
